The Positions Of Players On A Soccer Field

In soccer there are many soccer positions that are of equal importance. If one player fails at their position it can lead to a break down in defense. It is important to know the positions as a fan and more importantly as a player. Below are all of the soccer positions in the game of soccer.

First we have the Sweeper:

The sweeper is a defensive position and requires a good understanding of how the game of soccer is played. This position is played behind the defensive line and is responsible for controlling the defense. As the name alludes to, a sweeper roams from one sideline to the next when needed to help defend the goal.

Next we have the Fullbacks:

In a basic soccer position set up, there are 3 fullbacks, a center, right and left. The center fullbacks main job is to stop the forwards of the opposing team from scoring. They also help in starting offensive attacks by giving the ball to midfielder's. The left and right fullbacks play on either side of the center and need to have great speed. Usually right and left fullbacks will possess good technique and have the ability to react quickly to a situation.

Now comes the Midfielders:

In a basic lineup there are 4 midfielders, the left, right, central and defensive. The left and right midfielders must possess good passing abilities. They help to play the ball onto the forwards and also as a buffer for the defenders. The defensive midfielder plays just in front of the defenders. Defensive midfielders must possess good passing abilities and support the defenders most of the time. The central midfielder needs to possess good ball handling skills as well as passing abilities. They play the ball to the forwards and also backup the defensive midfielder when the opponent attacks.

Next we have the Forward and Striker:

The striker and forwards are the ones who focus solely on scoring. They must possess good ball handling abilities and be able to accept the pass from the midfielders in stride.

Finally, we have the Goalkeeper:

As the name alludes to, the sole purpose of the goalkeeper is to keep opponents from scoring. They also act as an encourager to fellow teammates on the field.

As you can see there are many soccer positions. Everyone has a role to play on the field and every role is important. A break down in position can lead to an advantage for the other team and possibly a score.
